Hiawatha
Hiawatha’s founders established a standard of community spirit and volunteerism more than half a decade ago. Hiawatha is served by Interstates 380 and 80, ensuring accessibility to nearby communities and cities. The city of Hiawatha has experienced significant growth recently due to the availability of prime land and development opportunities. In terms of business, Hiawatha is considered the “crown” at the top of the I-380 Technology Corridor, thanks to this substantial commercial and residential growth.

Hiawatha is home to many opportunities for entertainment and recreation, heightening its allure to visitors and new residents. The Cedar Valley Nature Trail starts here and runs all the way to Evansdale. Constructed on abandoned railroad land, the trail is flat for its entire length, as the original locomotives required a 2% grade or less. The Trail crosses several habitats -- including prairie grasslands, woodlands and riverlands - and offers many opportunities to view birds, wildlife and wildflowers.

Hiawatha is also home to the Anaheim Angels’ professional farm team, which plays in a new $15-million stadium. The Roughriders hockey team plays in an ice arena that is also open to the public. Hiawatha has numerous golf courses, enough to please golfers of every skill level. Several parks featuring such amenities as gazeboes, softball diamonds, playgrounds, open areas, pavilions for rental, and tennis, basketball and volleyball courts have been built in the area.

Educationally, students in Linn County consistently rank above the national average. Additionally, the state of Iowa has presented 12 First in the Nation in Education (FINE) awards to the Linn County School District in past years.

Mount Vernon is a unique, historic community offering many choices in recreation and entertainment. Along with a small-town atmosphere, Mount Vernon also offers big-city amenities: Cedar Rapids is an easy 15-minute drive, while Iowa City is just 20 miles to the south.

Mount Vernon also offers a variety of recreation and entertainment options. The Heritage Days festival is held in July, while Uptown Holiday Christmas runs through December. Palisades-Kepler State Park is nearby, with 76 campsites and four rustic family cabins available for rental. For fishing enthusiasts, the Cedar River offers excellent fishing for a variety of species, including bass, bluegills and channel catfish.

Education is a priority in Mount Vernon and post-secondary students can take advantage of the prestigious and historic Cornell College. Founded in 1853, Cornell College ranks among the top colleges and universities in the nation. Approximately 1,000 students from four foreign countries and 38 states attend Cornell.

The nearby community of Center Point is convenient to both Cedar Rapids and Waterloo for work, entertainment or shopping. Center Point also boasts the Peony Garden, a unique family-owned shop providing hard-to-find peony varieties and extensive gardening tips.

The city of Ely has been experiencing steady growth in recent years. In fact, it is the fifth fastest-growing city in the state. Founded in 1872, Ely is known as the north entrance to Lake McBride.
